We don't know what really happened before the man died, we can imagine different scenarios :
1) he might wanted to keep all the money for him and tried to look good to the girl, so he tried to kill his accomplices - since they failed in their mission - but was also killed.
2) the police is in their way to capture them and he fire shot to the bandits to save his face, but was also killed by one of the thugs.
Since she was shocked, she didn't really knew what happened and mistook that Jinho since then for a gentle man who went to save her, while he's not.
