I also think that since he's experienced life somewhere else, where people are breaking free of older traditions (like the law in Germany being changed, so now women can vote), he's maybe hoping he can pull his friend into the changes (break free the tradition of inheritance and arranged marriages) and set him free too.
So I don't think he's trying to be unkind. If anything, it's because they're friends that he can't simply let him go off and live a life he thinks (with good reason) would be miserable for him
