The dad's character really shows how society is today.

"It's fine if THEY'RE gay. Just not my kid"

It's the us vs. them mentality. I remember my sister-in-law asked my brother what he would do if their child was gay, and oh boy he was extremely hesitant (he has a bunch of good gay friends too), and said it's different when it's your child. My sister-in-law rebutted and said "no it's not".

It's the same concept as, "I'm not racist. I have a lot of Asian/Black friends".

Tsk tsk.

I think in some cases it is that--disapproval or disgust.

In others it's not wanting your kid to suffer. It's like, you might love and care for disabled people, but ifi it came down to your own baby in your womb, you would wish hard that it NOT be disabled so life would be easier, more "normal."

I think parents know that there is going to be some sort of roughness in the road for an LGBTQ person, and would wish not to have that suffering for their child.

But in other cases, it's as you say. They simply think this is "less than" and are put off by the idea altogether.

The fact that the man apologized and said he acted quite shamefully shows he's not horrible. A real homophobe would not have apologized or stopped to reconsider. They simply would have not given a damn they hurt someone.

totally right . there are definitely parents out there who worry for their children . But , even so , the fact that they worry and "prefer" a "normal" life for their child is , in itself , a rejection . Even if a parent was worried , above all they'd express understanding or wanting to understand to the help . In this manga's case , it's more of "who turned you that way" or "dont tell me you are that way" . And that implies homophobia , making homosexuality a sort of spreadable "illness" or something to avoid .
But yes , i still agree with you that not all cases are parents trying to be homophobic or against queer identities . however , in cases they antagonize the fact = homophobia .

after reading the chapter i can see where you're coming from . It does seem like he wants to be worried , but i don't rescind my analysis of his actions . I'd just like to add that even if people are not trying to be homophobic , there are still unconscious opinions of homophobia in everyone . So maybe it may seem like that's where the father is coming from . His actions though, were and are still homophobic .
