Really? It looked to me like he wanted to approach him because he's the guy he used to have a crush on, he looked very hopeful he'd be remembered and it looked like he was wanting something romantic from their interactions. That's a good point about the hammer thing, i guess that could be why he's avoiding him, though it looked to me that he just doesn't want to risk falling for a guy who doesn't like him back. He comments on how he showed up to their "date" dressed casually, gets dejected and then when they start to hit it off and he sees his happy face he recoils and doesn't want to get any closer because him coming dressed casually made it clear to him that the other doesn't view it as a date. That's what i got anyways. The hammer flashbacks are random and don't appear to have been tied into the story yet, seems like they're more for US to see rather than that they're actually notable events happening currently.
