I've been wondering for a long time if I should read the"prequel" or nor, but it looked very shounen-ai and no yaoi. Is the plot good and does it make you understand this manga's characters better?

The plot is really good, and the arts not bad either, though not as phenomenal as in here u are. There’s only a slight appearance by YuYang and it’s mostly all about LinXiang and XiaoGuang so it doesn’t really relate to this one other than YuYangs appearance, and it IS quite shounen ai, but I’m betting Here U are is gonna be as shounen ai as that one, so I recommend it. Totally.
Btw, gosh I’m so relieved I’m not the only one who didn’t get it from the start

If you don't like slow progress manhwas then I think you won't like Guang Xiang. Its very slow and I guess this is almost a spoiler but they take a long long time to get together....at the very end.

GOSH I LOVED HIS CHARACTER in that manhwa! I did find him desperate but funny and cute and interesting I DIDNT THINK THERE WOULD BE A WHILE AWESOME AF SPIN OFF DAMMIT!
