I think there is so much potential for his parents to also mature and grow up, and to accept him. I know this type of parents, the old school parents that have a certain plan for you when you are born, you know the classic "i hope my children grow up healthy, study, work, marry and form a family" kind. Plenty of these are judgmental to boot, but plenty others, simply takes long to change gears (there is also the societal pressure). While I do agree with YuYang's point of view of his parents (the whole embarrassment and cowardliness part) I also think that they, deep down, love him enough to make an effort to understand him. Is the other family members that obviously don't care enough to try to understand. I just think there is some light of hope for them. Even if just a faint one, considering china's homophobia.

Not just in China, my friend. I see things getting a little rough here in Brazil, too. In a major catholic country, if you decide not to marry in a church, you're too different, aren't thinking of your parents, your family, what will other people say about it? If you decide to not have kids, people will keep saying that you're too young and you're bound to change your mind anytime soon, and who'll care about you in the future? And what about your parents, won't you give them grandkids? If you are gay, then you're too young and curious, there's time to change your mind, or if it's later in life then things must have gone terribly wrong in your previous relationships, you're out of your mind, you're a shameless whore, and so on.

Oh I know about it pretty well since I'm also from latinamerica, and is the same in plenty other places here and in Asia, which is totally nonsense. I mentioned China here cuz it's where this particularly story is from and that's where the parents are living, so I can imagine the difficulty of them changing their point of view considering now their background.
