I'm not sure if it's smelling bullshit, it fels more like he just rejects the idea of his son marrying anyone else than his old, dead friend's daughter, for whom he feels guilty of not being able to help her father when the latter had helped him a great deal when he was at his lowest point wanting to commit a suicide.
