Actually, I highly suspect that the alpha had feelings for him even when he was a beta. In that sense, he had already won him over without even trying anything but being himself. It would be why the alpha could never leave him alone and was so quick to offer when mates were suggested

He probably believed the same thing that else believed about alphas and betas. He wanted to be with him but societal norms was in the way
