"The last kiss' was rather bittersweet, twas a different time, different place so they likely had to just conform to their societal norms and get married and have children. It's obvious that they do love their families, but suppressing that part of themselves for so long, and then drawing a line in the sand, seemed more of a realistic end than them being able to divorce and start a relationship with one another.
