I don't really think this needs to end in a different way. I loved the end even if, as I romantic kind of person I would have enjoyed the "happy ending" everyone was expecting, but this it's an happy ending on its own.
And also I don't really understand the hate on the guy, well I can see why people would hate him but for me it doesn't make any sense, insecurities are so awfully hard to handle so I really can't fault anyone
