So this is just a guess, but what if the former tutor is actually only after Kat's money? It's just a hunch, but I bet he knew she liked him before he left, so knew he'd have a chance with her when he came back.
I guess this is all coming from the fact that he seems sleezy to me, an Kat said in the beginning that guy's were all after her money
