That was a flashback of how he felt 10 yrs ago. Showing how before he wasnt honest with his feelings and now 10 yrs later (present time) he's not gonna let Don go.
after the flashgback he still think in a toxic way and not healthy way. so not much has change in his set of mind, that how it feel like.
