It's only being realistic, you know... As far as their knowledge goes on how to deal with the consuming, those are the only options she has right now. Or she'll have to miraculously find a way to make multiple large cold coins, which for someone of her age and standing it pretty much impossible, normally. If anyone could do it though, it would be her, because of her knowledge of our world. Only Lutz knows of that though.
As for making her work for them, I can't really blame them. They're not bad people so they would never treat her badly. But they ARE still a merchant family. Of course they'd want someone as valuable as Maine working for them. It would make their business prosper to incredible heights.

The only difference is that she was sold with the anticipation of her becoming a second or third wife, because her family has power and wealth. If even the grand-daughter of the guild master was sold off, what position would a poor commoner find themselves in?

She couldn't be the main wife responsible for producing an heirs. Living
their lives as slaves-second or third wives is as close to normal as they
can get. Like Frida said marrying for love is impossible for them because
theres nothing more emotionally stressful than love.
