The story right now is taking place before that happens. They are currently 3rd year middle school students.
Middle school still. the way the author draws them makes them look like seniors in high school though so I like to think that.

Guuuuuuuuyyyyyyyyssssssss I wanna know if they are now in middle school or in high school because I got confused because of the first chapters because xixi said that he disappeared in high school and know he is back but somehow in those chapters they are together as if nothing happened
