I disagree with the people saying this isn’t worth the read or was disappointing. Demian Syndrome is easily one of the better BL works out there, even with its age. You can’t appreciate it for what it is by comparing it to more recent BL stories (most of which are pretty bland, imo). The story focus was purely on the relationship and psychology of the main characters, which is why you don’t get the modern tropes of “meet the family” or chapters dedicated to flashbacks. The necessary elements are there. And yes, there was rape but it was handled seriously and impacted the characters’ development. It wasn’t glorified or downplayed. There’s a lot of dialogue because, again, this is a story centred on the characters and relationship, not simple plots (and it’s the authors style). Lastly, if you’re familiar with Hesse’s Demian, it lends even more interpretive value to the characters and story.

In short, I would recommend this work, especially to those looking for something different, a classic, or to people who like to psychoanalyse/interpret characters.

But... the relationship and psychology of the main characters is influenced by the psychology and relationship they have with their family and friends. T.

Yes, but I feel we’re given enough to understand them. It isn’t necessary to spend more time on or show their families. I don’t think that would have added much to the story.
