I don't know why but when I re-read this story and be overwhelmed by all the feels (THEY CALL HER MOM I LOVE THEM) all I thought is that deep down, in that future, they do love their stepmom or maybe not resent her that much but never shows it so when they got the news of their stepmom death, it all crash down on them that again, they lost another family member and somehow they regret it.
And so, in some way, everyone in the family actually got thrown back into the past and on their own little way, changing what had happened, what they regret, and what they want.
