I think it's because Kaburagi wasn't a sociable kid in his school days, so teachers (in a very patronizing and self-righteous way) would bug him to make friends and be social. So basically his friendship with Sanjou began as a means to shut people like that up and leave him alone. I could very well have missed something too bc I tend to skim flashbacks, so if anyone has anything to add to that, feel free.
Yep, and he was using him and being all fake, that's why he feels kinda awkward in my opinion and he cut all ties because he's himself now. When it comes to Sanjou I guess he thought he was his one true friend, that's why he can't let go.

Could someone tell me what exactly happened bewteen Kaburagi & Sanjou? Kaburagi used the friendship with Sanjou somehow... but how? I'd get it if Sanjou'd be the rich kid, but he's not. Did he simply use his popularity? Seems like something he wouldn't have much interest in... so what's going ooon xD
