The ending made sense. I like the fact that this story referenced the Plank of Carneades, it's a fitting theme for the game of life narrative. I can understand that in a survival scenario you should try to look out for yourself, which is why I don't completely blame the characters for refusing to save the father and daughter. But at the same time I think if they actually tried to help if it was possible then all of these tragedies could've been prevented. I guess in the end when it comes to survival, one way or other blood will always be spilled.
