I think it's quite obvious he's in love with her, but for some reason doesn't want to admit it. To me it seem like he's just someone who try to convince himself that he doesn't like her by criticizing her in his mind.
He seems like a total tsundere. He criticizes her in his mind, but acts kind towards her and blushes whenever she smiles or is kind to him.
