Sorry but there doesn't seem to be any love behind it, I wanna cry

I think this is the classic unreliable narrator. Have you noticed that we've only been seeing one point of view and that one narrator just realised that "in the darkness, all he can see is himself"? I think there is love between then yes but the mc doubts it so we are bound to doubt it as well if we don't read it carefully.
