Tf? Aren't they just prolonging a story that should have been ended already?

Not really, this arc has been in the making for a while now with several key components being littered throughout the other chapters (Marlin's hidden motives were hinted several times, Cath making vague comments about Arthur and his unimaginable power, etc). If they had chosen to end it prematurely there would have been several loose ends just left.
