I suspect this is how the director has treated all his lovers, so it's just how he is. I got the sense from that woman who broke up with him (for her daughter's sake) that she didn't want to break up and that the director treated her really well, but she made the sacrifice to pay attention to her daughter. The Director just seems to be a considerate lover. He's probably just being himself, not trying to make it harder for our beautiful little adorable uke.
Plus part of this whole "one night" was to make up for being a misjudgy shit with the rough sex that first time. So, all that gentleness is atonement, too.
