Richard did grew up mature and gentle in the future where Brittany finally lost weight. Richard regrets the kidnapping incident because thought Brittany exercised harder to defend herself since Richard was useless back then. He wants to protect her this time.
On one hand, I hate the guy because he was judgemental and humiliated and shamed her upon their first meeting....
On the other hand, they did send him wrong portraits which is cheating and she also didn't do herself any service by smelling bad and acting like a cliché villainess and all that cringey laughing is just GUH !
So I don't know how to feel about the prospect of a future romance between the two. At least, he didn't ditch her after she had been faithful to him for years all for the sake of a newbie bitch like most stories with a dumbass princess and broken engagements so there's that.
