I think it's partly a cultural difference... (considering where it's written, y'know). Somethings are exaggerated, but somethings are also half-truths.
The reality is, "social image" is a big deal in many Asian countries... and self-esteem is a bit more social-relationship-dependant...than it is say in north america.
For example, students in Japanese classrooms rarely raise their hands up because they fear giving the wrong answer or looking stupid. Things like a whole class laughing at you for your mistakes is also very real. (just to give an example)
Why do characters always wanna tell the main couple that they're not "good" for eachother or whatever just because one of them is popular. I get that if it was a friend or someone close to the couple and they saw that it was really toxic or something then yeah. But most of them are just jealous and selfish and as a plot device I'm tired of it, like it's an overused trope. Mangas, especially shoujo manga makes it a main point to focus on cheesy overused tropes for laughs and shit but it's honestly tiring as a reader to read 10 mangas and they all be the same.
