I totally agree with what you said as well, but like what Alice pretty much said, not every manga has to be a "great" read or "masterpiece." Like this manga won't be something we remember for the rest of our lives, it's just a quick feel good and wholesome one. And that's fine in my opinion. The same goes for books and movies.
Ugh.....I'm going to get so much hate for this (unless people actually decide to be respectful of differing opinions?), but I really didn't like it.
First time in a looong time where I couldn't wait for a manga to end. It was cliché and overdone from start to finish, and all of the emotions fell flat for me.
I think a major part of the problem is that the author included so many different pieces, but expanded on none of them.
- "Kiyo is a dancer" (shows a few scenes of him dancing and the story goes nowhere into his passion for dance. It is just simply stated and that's it)
- "Chii-chan is Kiyo's childhood friend" (shows a single flashback and that's it)
- "I like Chii-chan, but he doesn't know" (Chii-chan finds out almost immediately in the story and accepts it right away without any deep emotions. Like "Oh, I didn't know. Let me kiss you just to be sure. Ok, I love you. Now we're a couple")
- "I've already been bitten" (two conversations later, it's revealed to just be a cat bite)
-Pregnancy scare
-Wedding
-Baby
-The end.
Kiyo's unusual height and the "surprise" reversal in Chii-chan's parents' genders were also things casually stated/included without it having any real influence on the story whatsoever.
Basically, this story greatly lacked substance - and instead was built entirely on lots of "Oh, btw...".
