Well he agreed with Lari that humans were beneath them all along....but he had apparently asked Lari to leave River alone when they first got to her forest...when she cut Rivers neck... but then he flip flopped and let him die moments later.
Khaol was always ok with Lari belittling River anyway! He never totally put off Lari even when River wasnt feeling ok with her taunts. He was unconcerned about it. That itself explains what amount of love he has for River.
