i argee on this so much. no rlly talks about it. i had asked a question before if nene had some character development and she comes off less annoying (but the question goes unanswered). i somehow got annoyed right away when she took the candy away and ate it. her character just comes off annoying and its not funny imo. its prob the only thing preventing me from rereading the manga.

In contrast, I find Yashiro a pretty good female MC when compared to others. Firstly, she’s a teenage girl. Of COURSE SHE HAS FANTASIES. It’s a character flaw I can’t really give her flack for. Because I’m a teenage girl. And I relate on a lesser scale. Craving validation from someone -sometimes friends, sometimes guys- isn’t bad. It’s human.
But she’s also thoughtful/empathetic when thinking about Hanako (how he’s dead, and really feels for him the more she gets to know him). Second, she actually is useful when it comes to destroying yorishiros. She’s the “priestess” who is the only one(?) that can destroy them so far. And there’s that thing with the salt during the zombie mokke ark I HOPE the author expands on, bc it’d be awesome if Yashiro could utilize some sort of purifying power.
I agree she isn’t super original, but I disagree that she’s a bad female MC. Because how tf are you supposed to be super useful when apparently everyone around you is either a souped-up supernatural or an exorcist?

Idk man I think she really grew on me because I kind of relate... there are so many stories out there where insecurity in a character is seen as being “realistic” or “true to the character” (usually slice of life/romance stories), but in other genres it’s seen as annoying and weak (usually action/horror/thriller, perhaps because the audience is more looking for something fast-paced and these kinds of characters slow that down?).

Oh!!! This is kiiiiinda unrelatedly to misogyny but. Have you EVER come across an action anime where the main character is NOT annoying, and female? I freaking grew up on shounen battle anime (Naruto, One Piece, Bleach) and WHERE ARE MY FEMALE MAIN CHARACTERS??? I feel like the closest we’re gotten to good anime is Kill La Kill (really? Decent action and THAT much fan service?), Soul Eater, Bofuri (still doesn’t really have that “action vibe”), and Akame ga kill (WHYYYYY SHE WAS THE MC IN THE MANGA, they changed the mc to a guy in the anime).
Lol I don’t mind if you talk about it. Rant. Hit me. I’m bored, am taking a break from studying for exams, and can talk about anything.

Ughhhhh yes dude :// And actually that kinda is the misogyny LOL they gotta make them the annoying and underdeveloped side character, MERELY a love interest for the mc. Hell, even the MCs have shared a deeper connection + relationship with their rival or "bro".. That's why most viewers(yes including men) ship the mc with their male rival or best friend. And that's why everyone including female viewers pick on the female characters bc the reality is they fucking suck. Male writers know nothing about women at all. And if they are badass they need to give watermelon tiddies and they're MINORS. LITERALLY CHILDREN. LITERALLY MIDDLE + HIGH SCHOOLERS. That's why I love hunter x hunter bc it's the only big shounen I know that demonstrates a diversity of female strength without sexualizing them and giving them "sexy" revealing outfits. Don't get me wrong. My gay ass loves sexy female characters but to see this redundant trope for women IS misogyny. Shounen is written as "for men" but literally there's just a bunch of female viewers that watch and enjoy shounen to the fullest as well. They aren't even the low minority. I can name a bunch of other underrated shounens with powerful non sexualized women though if you want? Look at this. You got me ranting about misogyny in anime even though I said I wouldn't LMFAO

LOLOLOL HIT ME BITCH. Give me them shounen where I don’t feel the need to sigh at the sight of boobs taking up >40% of the screen or women literally JUST THERE to be scooped up. I’m just so disappointed because there is NOTHING WITH A FEMALE PROTAG that is battle anime action, decent, and Good. Also, I never really thought about why female MCs were rejected for the bro, and that does make sense. Because apparently girls in anime don’t need to have personalities if they’re cute and “waifu” material?
I find that (especially in shoujo!!!) “female strength” is really only expressed in “strength of character”, usually where the female MC is able to bear a pain on her own or is able to chase after the guy or is treated unfairly and doesn’t speak up. And when the girl also has “physical strength” it’s treated like something novel, or freakish.
Okay. I might be stretching it at this point. But it seems that the female characters never really win meaningful fights in tournament arcs. I’m talking BNHA Bakugou vs Uraraka, Food Wars Megumi vs Ryo, and even after that BNHA fight Uraraka has only been seen fighting another female? Bish what? I had high hopes for BNHA expanding her character bc it’s more modern shounen.
Bruh I was fanning the fires, not trying to get you to shut up.
This series is cool bc same sex inclusion but it would be better if its heroine wasn't the typical bland and underdeveloped damsel in distress. its as if every anime's female characters needs to have self esteem issues and be weak as fuck...I believed she had potential considering she's the protagonist but making her character reliant on everybody's strength but her own is bleak and typical. this 'damsel in distress' archetype, in some rare cases, can be pulled off enough to not make it overwhelmingly irritating but as an addition to her lack of capability, she's endlessly desperate and spends every waking second fawning and fantasising over boys. this has nothing to do with nene's shy demeanour because i have a solid list of female anime characters whose exaggerated femininity and outwardly expressed sensitivity is their charm. her character, in my opinion, is just an utter letdown. and that's on internalized misogyny in fiction luv xX
