Not to sound reductive of the genre, but to me it was yaoi that felt more like it was written by people with a fetish for gay men instead of actual understanding of male homosexuality. I'm not even sure if there are any noteable male yaoi mangaka
Oh there are definitely a lot of yaois out there that have that vibe of only being "acceptable" because guy-on-guy is hot, but there's a lot more yaoi compared to Yuri so it's easier to find yaois that don't give that vibe.
I also feel like it's gotten better in the last couple of years compared when I first started reading yaoi (around 2010?).
And noo not just them, I have a hard time trying new yuris just because a lot of the ones I've come across are like that. Especially schoolgirl fantasies that are just fanservice but with no actual progress. I have a whole bunch I just follow now to get update notifications.
