It's shown in the first couple of chapters when Khahol explains why he chose a man (River) and the history he had with the women of his (River's) clan!! I don't know exactly when tho

It only says he needs physical touch in order to stay alive as god and his other brides were given food and died and kahol made a bargain: their reincarnated soul in exchange for their energy

He explains to River that he had always preferred males (he's gay), however, the clan always gave him female brides. And @shika explained how he didn't really have s*x with the female brides but needed to have some type of physical contact to recover his energy.
