Much of his sadness in adulthood stems from himself though. He was immature and selfish. He watched his friend cry and struggle for years just because he didn't want him to be with Naoki. Perhaps if he put all of his energy in finding hapiness in something/someone else he would've been happier sooner. All that crap about not having someone tainting his friend is another level of insanity though.
