its a common trope. woman are usually resigned to be more the magic types, meanwhile guys focus on overpowering through physical activity. he can still use some magic to enhance his sword or catch his enemy by surprise so it works out pretty fair (i think she can still benefit from learning some self defense though)
Honestly, I think he acts more composed and stuff bc he feels obligated to since he’s older than Arien. He clearly likes to keep his feelings hidden (as seen in previous chapters.)
I like how Alex change the "shut up" to "be quiet" since he knows the kids are there
Also how arjen is alright with arien having more mana than him without getting jealous or something
