He told them that his teacher taught him the same thing over and over again for the past year, for lets say every 5 days so when teached the same thing repeatedly he will obviously know the answer without hearing it from his teacher's mouth. He told his ex-guardian that due to the lack of information and by having remained ignorant he will have someone else appointed as his guardian. (That's when the Duke interferes and calls upon the guy, who tells them about the tradition.)
