Put urself in there shoes. U can't expect them to be all happy happy, the way they were treated. Everything is new to them and they don't know who's telling the truth or not.

Well, he's a king. He couldn't just choose his beloved & abandon his duty & some other stuff that i couldn't even think of. He has many responsibilities & bad things may happen if he just suddenly died. So that's probably why he follow her demand in sleeping w/ her. (probably)

Like you said, everything is new to them & they don't know who to trust. I get that but what makes it ok for them to trust the duke in the first place? They know that nobles don't like illegitimate children like them so didn't they even think that the duke might after something by approaching & held no hostility to them
