pretty sure they stated why he doesn't remember but allow me to refresh your memory instead: they said that the little girl's mother was from a group of people who worshipped a god that needs to be remembered/known by its people, so somehow this is connected to its people. which means that when one of these people (like the mother) dies, they will be forgotten by everyone who isn't part of the group (that's my guess) aka total amnesia on the dad's part.
