Actually, as far as I know in the original telling, both step sisters saw off their own toes to fit the glass/fur slipper. Obviously this trick doesn't work. After Cinderella marries the prince, all three go to beg at the palace door but are refused and stoned to death.
I meant the old retellings as well. My bad I should have specified though I thought that it was enough by saying "old stories" instead of "original story". The most famous are the disney retellings that also follow the pattern where cinderella finds her happiness first and the middle sister (named Anastasia by Disney) finds her happiness second... Or maybe the other retellings are just following disney? I haven't found one that was made before the 1950s.
In the old cinderella stories, the middle sister finds her happiness after cinderella does when she leaves the influence of her mother and older sister. This may be a completely different retelling where the mother is nice, but I'm glad to see a work were the older sister finds happiness too.
