The mc is actually neutral and only does something to satisfy his selfish reasons, otherwise he's indifferent. The mc here is actually badass and he can obliterate a country if he wanted to. I actually like him because he just wants to go his own way and not intentionally join in on the war that's ongoing. The only way you can have him on your side is if he's compensated (with food and books lol). He's not looking down on others, he actually just isn't interested unless something caught his attention. His mindset is that he is who he is and will do what he wants when he wants to. Those classmates of his that are the so called "heroes" are fucking stupid cause theyre just a bunch of sacrificial lambs or scapegoats when time comes. They believe shit that the king is spouting without batting an eye and that makes them idiots in my book. Theyre so fucking prejudiced too like wtf talking trash bout the mc when they themselves are fucking weak.
