It's a minor character death. Later on Nian Nian and his father will be reunited but father is already very sick. At first they weren't gonna acknowledge each other, father because he didn't want NN to be sad and NN coz he never thought to find his father. Things happen and they got closer. NN was always with his father, talking with him through video calls and staying by his bedside during his final days until one night NN woke up running to his father's bedroom and father's health started failing with no hope of recovery. It was sad, but xie you was with him throughout all this.
It's a happy ending, without a doubt.

Finished the novel. The story is overall fluffy about their relationship but there's a bit of angst towards the end with one character's death and their past is just sad. TvT my poor Xie You, my poor Nian Nian...
