It’s shonen-so basically. The story is action-focused so it takes a long time for the characters to unambiguously label their relationship as love. Until then, it’s more like a very close friendship (they sacrifice themselves for each other) with sexual tension if we consider some aspects of the art.
And they have sex later on but it’s not explicit.
It's shonen Ai... We don't see the content of sex, but it does happen off scenes, And yes 'friendship' no it turned into love after a while.
Read for the action and historical honestly but yes this story is inherently gay.
