And yes, his paranoia is probably influenced by whatever traumatic event happened in his past, but it's a part of everyone's life to grow beyond the hyperdefensive coping mechanisms and stop thinking of everyone as a villain, and yourself as betrayed. I say this as someone with PTSD who is intimately familiar with this type of disordered thinking. Acting this way will make you and the people around you more miserable, and is based in fear of a past that lives in the memory, not the reality of now.
