When it comes to romance novels, there are people who love the typical Harlequinn kinda romance and then there are people who actually wanna read a fresh story because they love the genre and are ardent readers.. Cheesy romance lines and situations are okay when used in moderation and wisely to enhance the plot.. There should be an actual development in characters, the plot and the quality of relation as a whole.. It shouldn't feel rushed in any sense or too snail-paced, the pace of the plot development should make sense.. The tried and tested tropes are fine when presented in a new fashion or with a new twist.. The portrayal of characters should not be too over-whelming, their emotions should not be too magnified or minimized.. I'd rather the writer don't think skipping a few things is okay because the readers will understand or something like that.. Neither simply making your male lead a jerk or MCP chased by all kinda girls make him cool nor making your female lead a pitiful and overly cheerful person whom each and every guy falls for makes her more likable.. it doesn't matter if it has a happy, sad or open ending.. it doesn't always have to be a bright and cheerful or tear-jerker, it can be dark themed and have more substance than just romance..

Try hard MCs, in my opinion, are just the worst. I saw many stories with good plots but MCs with this kind could easily ruin the experience for readers. I love seeing natural MCs and not-so-dumb or not-so-dense female MCs. Also, I think everyone could agree with this—when 2nd MLs are left hanging or not able to moved on after being dumped by the MC.

I love the enemies turned to lovers trope. But what makes/breaks a story for me is the pacing. I hate it when one moment they’re at each other’s throats and after a few nice exchanges they’re suddenly soulmates. The reason for their hatred can’t be a half baked “he’s a jerk therefore I want to see him die” like no? I want to see characters morals and ideas clash and be pushed to the limit before they reach an understanding. A relationship that doesn’t romanticize toxic behaviors but grows on a healthy one. I think what I hate most is the lack of communication that later leads to misunderstandings or a jealous person trying to tear the two people apart tropes. I want something new. Something fresh.

I personally prefer reading something with mature characters, not into annoying highschool drama lol. My favorites tend to be atmospheric, realistic stories with well developed and likeable characters. Basically something that sells me that they're real people. experiencing real emotions, situations and circumstances, etc. An example would be Gusari's djs (especially iwazumi and oikawa ones) and this one (this mangakas other stories are really good too tho) :
