I got the feeling that they knew each other beforehand and that the dad just wasn’t taking him very seriously. Like he assumed it was a temporary fixation or a whim that would be gone in a week. (The character is kinda flaky.) He no doubt kept an eye on them, but years of inaction made him believe it was all over.
