Okay, so I've read this manga a bunch because it was the first shoujo I ever read and it has a special place in my heart, but everytime I read it the whole arc with Haru showing up bothers me more. So, big ol' spoiler for the manga if you're working your way through it, but here's the rundown of the arc.

Basically, Kyouta's old friend from middle school, Haru, moves back to Japan and joins their school, and he's got a vendetta against Kyouta for literally trying to force himself onto his girlfriend, Rika, back in middle school. And so Haru promised that if Kyouta found someone he loved he'd do the same thing to her. Sooo basically what happens is Haru tries to force himself on Tsubaki, but as she's crying and trying to make him stop, he himself starts to sob saying he can't go through with such a cruel thing.

Tsubaki is understandably traumatized by this and is now thinking "could my boyfriend have really done that to another person?" and when she confronts him about it, Kyouta realizes that his own girlfriend no longer feels safe with him so he breaks up with her.

Tsubaki talks with her sister and she's like "what, Kyouta wouldn't do that, that girl must have made it up" and so Tsubaki comes to this conclusion that she's gonna trust Kyouta and believe he wouldn't do such a thing because she knows him, there's no way.

When she tells him this and apologizes for doubting him, they get back together and he explains the truth that, yeah, Rika was trying to cheat on Haru and hook up with Kyouta, he said no, but she made it look like they were doing it to upset Haru and then accused Kyouta of forcing her. Sooooo more stuff happens and Tsubaki is trying to make Rika confess to everything so Haru and Kyouta can be friends again but she won't because she doesn't want to face what she's done and also kinda gives the valid reason that she's worried if she meets Haru again she'll begin to stalk her (and given what he's already done since we met him, I actually kinda get that).

Sooo they do this weird couple vs couple thing that also doesn't make much sense where it's like "if you win, I'll tell Haru, but if I win, I get Kyouta" and they kinda point out how dumb it is because Tsubaki at the end is like "and I don't own Kyouta, he chooses who he dates, so it's not like I could lose him to a bet" so they're in on the joke. And after Rika angrily confesses she made the whole thing up to break up with him, Haru finally apologizes TO KYOUTA and Kyouta is like "nah dude, apologize to Tsubaki, she's the one you literally assaulted" and he does and everyone is friends sooooo

OKAY

my problems with this entire mess of an arc are as follows. (1) Looking at this in a post metoo lens (and yes, I'm gonna bring in the real world because I believe the accurate portrayal of assault is important in media) it's kinda weird and problematic to have an entire plot based around a woman falsely accusing someone of rape because she's just a real B you know? It's like there's this sort of mythos that women have this "rape card" they can just pull out at anytime and I don't like seeing that. But that's not even the main problem here.

(2) Haru kinda sucks and is hecka creepy and the fact that he's just forgiven for everything is weird. He literally tried to assault Tsubaki and honestly, I got such creepy vibes from him. For the rest of the manga he's unproblematic and cute, so maybe including his character in some form would still be nice but his introduction was...like...just kinda gross.

(3) Kyouta is honestly a pretty well written character, and there is good writing here, but the entire way is written in a way that makes it like "Kyouta didnt' really do anything wrong here, so it's okay". And here's where I'm gonna offer a correction to this arc that would have been cool if they took this route instead.

SO MY REVISION

Basically, instead of introducing Haru in this big way, if I were writing it, I'd introduce one of the girls Kyouta dated back in middle school. He was notorious for dating then dumping women as a game, and having one of those actual women confront Kyouta would be really interesting.

So maybe the two of them are out on a date, the girl spots Kyouta, ends up following them and when Tsubaki is alone in the bathroom, legit tells him, "I dated him in middle school, and he does this game where he dates nerdy girls then dumps him, and I just wanted to warn you in case he's doing the same to you."

Tsubaki is of course taken aback but she'd be like "Oh no, we're actually a couple, I know about his past, it's okay, he actually tried doing the same to me--" etc etc.

But the girl pushes on and tells her Kyouta isn't a good person, and you should be with someone better.

From then on, Tsubaki will begin to learn the intimate details of what Kyouta did to women before her, and nothing too shady will come up, but definitely some dickish behavior will be revealed that Kyouta can't just explain away. It comes to the point that his only reply is "You know how I used to be, but it's different with you."

And I feel this could be a point where Tsubaki could be like "Just with me? What about other girls?" Because here's the thing, Kyouta straight up resented women at the beginning but he realized that Tsubaki wasn't like the women who'd hurt him in the past. So with that in mind, the question becomes has Kyouta overcome his misogyny or is Tsubaki just an exception and he still views other women the same way?

Now, from reading the entire thing, I think the case is he's gotten over his mommy issues enough to see all women as people (see how he interacts with that one girl...I can't remember her name, but he himself said if they'd met before Tsubaki he'd have done the same thing he always did and play with her too). So basically this could allow him to address that history within him while also accepting that he didn't just change for his girlfriend, he himself is a different person.

I think the plot points could repeat a little with maybe them splitting for a bit and separately addressing the situation. Kyouta would find the girl who told Tsubaki what he did and Tsubaki will breakdown her feelings for Kyouta and how she's willing to allow him to be a complicated and sometimes broken person.

But back to Kyouta, I would love to see him authentically apologize to this woman he's hurt in the past and address just what made Tsubaki different. That itself would be a great moment where after he apologizes to this woman she asks, "Just so I know, what made her different from all the other girls?"

And he'd kinda sit with the question and maybe say something like, "She never gave up on me."

And then after that they'd get back together, and that thing he loved about her, her persistence and commitment, is once again proven when she refuses to just sit by and let their relationship crumble.

I think that'd be cute as heck! And I wish something like that happened instead, but it didn't...and I'm not the writer...wo is me.

SO, BASICALLY

My idea is to have Kyouta and Tsubaki confront an actual hurdle in Kyouta's history that way it isn't so easily resolved by proper communication and truth telling. The thing is, Kyouta did everything that the girl said he did, and it's a matter of deciding whether or not Tsubaki is willing to see beyond his mistakes.

It would allow Kyouta be vulnerable in an interesting way while also addressing how crappy he was, there's some great dialogue between the two (in the actual manga) where Tsubaki breaks down these exact feelings how she knows that Kyouta has made mistakes but is trying to be better, and that's one of the things she really likes about him, and to have that moment also take place before she finds out the whole truth about Kyouta's history, it'd be really cool!

Plus, it'd give some closure to Kyouta's first character arc (cuz he's got more than one, if you ask me, first stopping his whole playboy nonsense, and then accepting his own vulnerabilities and allowing himself to be weak in front of Tsubaki. Seriously, I really love a lot of the writing in this manga)

So that's it, I just wanted to get that off my chest cuz I had the idea awhile ago and I like sharing "script doctor" ideas and stuff like that. Of course, I know editing a story and completely writing one is completely different, but whatever! Hope whoever read this far enjoyed my take and if you have any of your own ideas please share.

Here's a link to some raws that are in Chinese. Hopefully this gets picked up again, as I do like the author (well, I like her work sometimes, her more recent stuff is better than her old stuff which was...concerning)

Took some work, but I found a site with the raws, so if you'd like to poke around at those, go ahead!

It's still ongoing as of now, and is around 76 chapters. Luckily, the visual humor and context can usually tell you what's happening!

I wish I had a boyfriend that could smell my sadness...

I know right! I think if our partner notice something’s wrong just by the change of our actions or something and they try to talk to us about it I think people would be a little bit more honest with their feelings, because we (specially women) tend to just hide and bury our insecurities just so we don’t burden our partner.

Oh, all the pent up feelings of just waiting for someone to notice how terrible you feel. Goodness, it's a dream to think someone could just look at you for how you act and see something's wrong, but I feel it may be an unrealistic expectation (especially early on in a relationship), which is why you sometimes just have to say "Hey, everything sucks right now, wanna stay in tonight and eat ice cream while watching cartoons and I might periodically cry, but heck, get the tissues, let's cuddle." Now I want ice cream. Thanks, internet!

True, this is all just wishful thinking cause I know men are not wizards lol. But, yeah it’s hard to be honest at the early stage of the relationship there’s too many “what ifs” in our mind. It’s would really help the relationship if both of you can be straight forward with your feelings cause it builds a stronger connection between you two.

The world would be so much more convenient (and maybe a bit painful) if we were all just straightforward with our feelings.

I actually found the manwha's original posting, and it's got about 10 chapters.
I don't know any Korean...so I'm just looking at pretty pictures and stuff. But this isn't shoujo!! WHY IS IT CALLED SHOUJO!?!

FairyFanatic January 9, 2017 2:23 am

At first it was like, "he needs to stop being terrible", and he's not really awful to everyone anymore. But now he needs to actually be good to others, which is why he's still dying.
I really like this comic, and I hope it updates soon! It's like Groundhogs Day but worse, because it's not just one day, you'll be fine a few days then BOOM death over and over again! She spent almost a month on one day!
I couldn't live as her, all my comics and stuff wouldn't be updating (I love how she complained about that)
