Any genre is fine (including horror so long as there is a connection to the pet other than it *just* dying)
Not necessarily the focus of the story.
I know I've read romances where one character has a pet they dote on, whether it's a cat, dog, or hamster. If you have any stories you like with a pet, I'd love to read them :)
