i cried sm but the mum hit me the hardest, by defending him from her husband she demostrated she did love him for him but it's still a twisted tainted love born from desperation. ML seems to undestand that and feels grateful but will always be unable to reciprocate, to love her like a son loves his mum, because it carries the weight of everything else. the only "clear" love he has felt, the only love with no buts or ifs, it's the love he feels for MC
