I think we just like the idea of a man with a huge ego getting so flummoxed by the bottom. So in a way, he's being humbled anytime he doesn't get what he wants or something doesn't quite go his way.

It was hinted multiple time actually, little details or words that could go up to the beaten up theory. So I'm absolutly not surprised by it on the contrary.
Same for the MC, he doesn't just has insecurity, he has trauma and extreme social anxiety, little by little we can see his evolution (looks, clothes, expressions) but obviously some behavior are coming back and it's whole point 'cause he is not healed yet.
ML helped a lot, and the progress is already amazing in such a short time. He's lack of communication is part of is anxiety, and it's his first relationship so he is still learning, I trust them so they will fix everything
