So basically. The lover must’ve betrayed the snake god previously ( or been mislead ) which hurt or trapped the snake in the mountain. Snake decided to taken his revenge by cursing the lover to be reborn with no memories and be a sacrifice to him.
Every rebirth someone ( the priest ) lures the lover in the mountains and every times the snake kills him ( all those skeletons of men) the snake continues to live on.
