I think I know what happen they meet as kid maybe play around, there is a little bit of a game of hide and seek and maybe the Mc left him there by mistake and that scents of his become a trigger. Or it could be that he was left there and Mc found him that could also explain why the scent make him calm and able to sleep. (⊙…⊙ )
