That anger could just be a reflex to back him off. Also, it could be internalized homophobia. Remember that even queer people can experience internalized homophobia. Remember that although some people in China are open to homosexuality, it is still frowned upon enough for queer representation to be labeled as "friendship". Also, of course he would be confused!
