Okay I’m gonna go ahead and briefly summarize May’s thought process
Basically his whole life goal was to be loved by someone as much as possible. Unfortunately, for May, that means as EXTREME as possible. He’s also affection starved and laches onto anyone who gives him a bit of affection. We can see this with his ex who literally cheated on him, but convinced May to stay just by kissing and calling him cute.
Jooin treats May in a pretty fucked up way I admit at the start, but he starts becoming more affectionate when May remembers him. May also gets an ego boost when he finds out that Jooin wanted to neuter him because Jooin was jealous. Jooin then expresses his affection in various, slightly more normal ways while keeping May confined and having sex with him every so often.
May, probably having some sort of feelings because of how extreme Jooin’s actions were (and to him that = how much love,) tests Jooin by asking him to take the collar off. He probably wanted Jooin to keep being forceful and force May to stay by his side by refusing, but he’s disappointed because Jooin removes his collar. (For May that means Jooin doesn’t want to put in the effort to have him stay anymore, and that Jooin is bored of him/doesn’t want him anymore.)
May runs away because Jooin says “May belongs to me,” which isn’t an expression of love but an expression of possession over an object(and a cat, in this case, which May HATES.)
Anyways, I’m assuming May ran back to Jooin because May has a fucked up view of love and is like “oh if he’s chasing me down, doing all this blah blah he loves me soooo much” which is his life dream
