Honestly they all just the same. But now ppl make the distinction of level of smutness lol. The only clear diff is shounen ai and yaoi. Shounen ai focuses on coming of age, self identity relationship etc. there could be seggs but its not the focus. Yaoi is a general term but now it refers to adult themes, which includes yaoi smut. Its like level 2 yaoi. Level 3 of nsfw is yaoi smut. While bl just refers to the entire genre, not specific themes. Like collectively its all bl. But the themes can be yaoi shounen ai, smut (if it focuses on nsfw themes like explicit sex every other chapter) thats what I understand
